Dragons Hiding

Tree in Woods with Dragon Toe

Dragons are masters of hiding.
Sightings on the ground are rare.
Gannon would never have found one
but for the dragon toe below.
When he looked up,
The bark of the tree moved, and
A knot in the bark turned into an eye.
Fire blotted out the sky.
Gannon jumped on its back
As it spread leafy wings,
And together they flew toward the moon.

Skimmer

This new friend has a wonderful poem by Thomas Randolph matched with a dragonfly photo, and the dragonfly looks like a Common Whitetail male. What a coincidence! I just published a photo of a Common Whitetail female tonight. Life is magical, and I hope that magic comes your way! Blessings, Brenda

We the Fairies, blithe and antic,
Of dimensions not gigantic,
Though the moonshine mostly keep us,
Oft in orchards frisk and peep us.

A little about Brenda

I’m Brenda Davis Harsham. I live in New England with my fantastic husband and three story-telling children, where we are surrounded by music, gardens and magic.  New stories unfold around me all the time, and sometimes I’m lucky enough to write them down. The world is full of possibility and wonder. I’m inspired by nature, my kids, friends, storms, coincidences, art, magic and memories. I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember. I’m delighted to share my fairy tales with you here.

This site is for kids of all ages, and it’s safe…

Uncommon Dragonfly

Common Whitetail female dragonfly

 Uncommon mother,
Uncommon tired,
Living for 36 days,
Still, evanescent, wired.

Adventure: A Sunlit Path

Sunlit Path

The way was crisscrossed with roots and rocky.
Bellissa, the wood nymph, carefully tread
The sunlit path of shadow and dappled light.

Her ears were full of the music playing:
The symphony of green rustling leaves and
The decrescendo of the cicadas.

A crescendo of a dog’s barking by the shore
Caught her attention, and she hid in the silver birch.
The excited pup romped, shaking off an avalanche of drips.

She climbed toward a peak, leaving the shore behind,
The wind grew stiffer and the trees bent.
Ahead lay possibility, wonder and magic.

Always moving toward the next place,
Where imagination filled in the wood with secrets,
Caves, trolls, dragons, gnomes, friends and foe.

Something Blue

Blue berries

Remember the magic:
When you look closely,
What was hidden
Is found.
Something small
Can give you wings.
What was sad
Can give you strength.
What stole your voice
Can make you sing.
Remember the magic.

Ode to a Japanese Beetle

Beetle
Oval iridescent green body,
Wings of bronze, quiet and still,
Always hungry, tasting nature’s nectar,
Making lace of leaves, living life with a will.

Note: This is a Popillia Japonica or Japanese Beetle. The photo was taken in Dover, MA in the Noanet Woodlands.

Flower for a Friend

Rose of Sharon

Friends are like flowers.
They bloom, and they inspire.
They make the world beautiful.
We never forget.

Note: I dedicate this post to the memory of Ajaytao. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. He was a bright light in our world, and his spirit continues to brighten our memories. He was a good friend to me, welcoming me here, and I will miss him. I feel blessed to have shared the world with him. Namaste, Brenda

Make a Wish

Dandelion

Just draw in your breath,
Focus on a wish and blow your cares away!
Let your inner child laugh for joy.
The dandelion seeds will scatter,
Carrying your desires to the wind spirits.
May all your wishes some true.

Rainy Renewal

Rain on leaves

Opposites: rain and sun,
The yin and yang of life.
Clear cooling drops
Cleanse and refresh.
Even as I welcome the rain,
I long for the sun.

White Magic

White Petunias

White petunias made a happy, bright sight
Around the lair of the white witch.
So surrounded by beauty and light,
It gave the dark mage a painful twitch.
