sun-filled petals,
scalloped and scented,
soft as new baby’s skin

Notes: Happy Poetry Friday! Thanks to Sylvia Vardell at Poetry for Children for hosting. I’m in a trance of editing, a swirl of words, a maelstrom of meaning.
Beautiful, Brenda… ❤

An overflowing swell of beauty lies in your poem and photo Brenda–and your comment above sounds like another poem, “The air was still, and the flower and I held our breath.” Thanks for these luscious offerings!

Oh, man! I can just SMELL that peony when I look at it. And yes to the softness of the petals, too!

Thanks, Mary Lee. Isn’t summer wonderful? I have to wait another whole year for more peonies. 🙂

So, so beautiful! I’d frame this shot and hang it if it were mine. And I love the comparison to a baby’s skin. Perfect!

It was more crisp and full of light than I hoped for. The air was still, and the flower and I held our breath. 🙂

I spied some peonies in Adelaide – though I didn’t get as close to them as you obviously did! 🙂 (We don’t get peonies, and I think it was probably this very blog where I first discovered them…)

Yes, I remember you commenting on that. They don’t last long, but when they open, it’s like a miracle. From a golf-ball sized bud, you get a salad plate sized bloom. I have some planted in my yard, and each spring, their blooms put my azaleas in the shade. 🙂

Wow. That big! That’s even more impressive. (I didn’t see any that big in Adelaide.)

I am amazed every year. For their several days of bloom, they put the roses to shame, but in such an elegant, lady-like way. 😉

Love the alliteration! Our peonies have vanished, so it’s fun to see your beautiful picture and poem and think of next year.

Ours have faded, too. I’m slow to get pictures up this year and slower to write the poems for them.

What a stunning pairing of photo and words….I literally gasped as I opened up this page. That peony is so perfect it looks fake! lol. Baby’s skin…..and the scent. You’ve taken me on a journey in so few words. Brava!

Thanks, Linda. It was daunting to write words for such a glorious blooms, actually. I kept writing and scrapping, revising and sighing. But then, something finally clicked.

We cat people get frustrated and angry—-but they are fascinating creatures who purr!

Peonies are such dramatic flowers–in scent and appearance. Your picture is gorgeous and I love all those “s” sounds in your poem. Scalloped is a great word to use here!
