Notes: Originally, Memorial Day honored the horrific casualties of the U.S. Civil War, which outnumbered all other US wars combined until Vietnam. Americans honor our country and our fallen with parades, speeches, flags in the cemeteries. Does your country have a Memorial Day to honor those who fell in war?

We had Victoria Day last weekend, but it is more of a celebration of Queen Victoria’s birthday. On July 1, Canada Day, (like your July 4) there is Memorial Day as well, in 2 of the provinces.
Other provinces have their own memorial days. November 11, Remembrance Day, is our big national Memorial to the troops.

I like it, too, and I love that we wear Poppies and recite In Flanders Fields and hear the bagpipes at the parades and ceremonies.
