October Sky Haiku

Ghostly, low, silver-gray,

Tinges of black overhead,

Fall Halloween gloom…

Autumnal Fascination Haibun

IMG_8239

Autumn is my favorite season. Summer is too hot, winter too cold, spring too rainy, but autumn is just right. When I was growing up, I enjoyed kicking leaves, walking to school by myself, hearing them crunch underfoot. I even liked to rake leaves, but, shh, don’t tell my dad. Continue reading

Gnome Homes

IMG_8117

Mushrooms damp, mushrooms wet,

mushroom fallen, overset.

Can I eat you or would I die?

Better be safe and leave you lie.

Fairies, sprites, elves and gnomes

Need your caps for their homes.

In darkness you bloom in your magic way

Tempting, taunting and fae.

Turning One Hundred

It takes a long time to become young.
— Pablo Picasso

IMG_7703

Welcome to my hundredth post, a different kind of fairy tale today,
dedicated to someone well loved
who turned one hundred last Friday.

He was grumpy, nearly blind, taking small steps with a walker,
but still his blessings outnumber his age: Continue reading

Sprite Spite

A new Adventurous Fairy Tale, named Sprite Spite, is now available to read. An excerpt follows:

Sprite Spite

IMG_8154

Wings swiftly beating, Amadou dodged saplings and swung wide around old soul trees, the wind pulling his curly, brown hair straight back. He felt the tree spirits slumbering in the cool midday, their leaves turning golden shades of autumn.

Amadou had been unfurling fiddlehead ferns all morning, and he needed to blow off steam. He was looking for a wide ledge of fungus, just the right height above the ferns. He could see it in his mind’s eye. That day, rain had created the perfect conditions. Diving sprites give a tremendous scream, arch their backs gracefully, wings folded. Then they take a running jump from the fungus ledge, falling through the thick, damp air, eventually bouncing from fern to fern and water slalom skiing in the dew on their tiny feet.

Puddle-Wonderful Haibun

“The world is mud-luscious…
[and] puddle-wonderful”
e.e. cummings

IMG_7062

My neighbor greeted me mournfully with these sad words: “Your house always has that large puddle in front of it,” and she pointed. Sure enough, I could have laid down in that puddle, and it would still have been longer than me and wider, too.

“That’s okay,” I responded with a smile. “I have two small boys who will love that puddle.” She looked taken aback, but I was the kind of mother to take my boys puddle-stomping on a whim. We named that puddle Alligator Pond. Many times, we stomped there, in water shoes and rain boots, and found ourselves anointed with the magic waters.

Now we can see all the world in a puddle, earth, sky, trees and ourselves.

Puddle splash laughter,
Muddy knees, arms windmilling,
rainwater in boots.

Further Note: The puddle in the photograph is not Alligator Pond, which is much dirtier and much closer to the sidewalk.

Rainy Day Haiku

Awaking, skies dark,
Raindrops beat time on my heart,
Still room for beauty.

Dragon sky

Check out Lady Fi’s stunning Dragon Sky! Hurry before it disappears like the other dragons. 😉 Have a great Thursday, Brenda

ladyfi's avatarLady Fi

The autumn equinox rushed in

Like a ragged brow across the sky;

Ragged brow

A dragon breathing fire clouds

Of orange and rain.

Dragon

The strange light in the sky

Pulled us up the hill

Dog

To witness the sight of purple turmoil in the sky

In contrast to the calm surface of the lake.

(A few seconds later, the heavens opened

And a gale force wind started blowing

Making us dash for home in a whirlwind

Of laughter and leaves.)

Purple rain
