petalled, leafed and bare,
together through the long years
branches twined

Notes: As my husband and I plan our 25th anniversary, I think about love. It starts small, like a seed, and grows through the years. That first growth is fast, overtakes us, remakes us, but then it becomes stable as a tree, with deep roots, providing shelter and shade. Here’s a famous Mexican poet on love (in honor of Cinco de Mayo, even though it’s not a major holiday in Mexico):
Perhaps to love is to learn
to walk through this world.
To learn to be silent
like the oak and the linden of the fable.
To learn to see.
Your glance scattered seeds.
It planted a tree.
I talk
because you shake its leaves.

My experience living in Mexico is that the Cinco de Mayo was and is celebrated. It is the celebration of the Batalla de Puebla when the Mexican army defeated the French in 1862.

My aunt lived in Mexica City for years and she said none of her Mexican relatives celebrated.
