Music in the Trees

IMG_2557

I miss shaking a newspaper,
folding it closed, washing
black ink from my fingers,
feeling accomplished before
moving on with my day.

Instead, I hopscotch a crazy-quilt —
CNN. BBC. MSNBC. Fox. Round
and round, site to site and back,
never washing the stain
of sad news from my heart.

But I snap closed my laptop
and walk out into the sunshine,
where weighty words fade
and dreams are as real as
music in the trees.

Notes: The news has weighed on my mind. Images of fires, broken windows, crying brown faces, police in riot gear, masked people asserting a basic dignity with signs — #BlackLivesMatter. Yes. Of course they do. Why is this controversial? Why can’t we agree that black lives matter? Why does saying this mean that the military will be called out on protestors? For my children’s sake, I have to thank Beth. Inspired by her, I hiked along a narrow aqueduct trail. In the stillness, I remembered that the world is a beautiful place.

“There is always music
amongst the trees
in the garden,
but our hearts
must be very quiet
to hear it.”
