Snowflakes are White

Red Rose leaves against a snowy lawn

Roses are red,
snowflakes are white.
The first snowflake,
like a crystal kite,
dances and drifts
in silver sunlight.
More stars spiral and
accumulate overnight.
Snowpant-donning
excitement is dynamite.
Sledding at zero
Fahrenheit
brings a hot-cocoa-
and-cookie appetite.
But first, anyone up
for a snowball fight?

Notes: Happy Winter! Happy Holidays! Happy Poetry Friday! Thanks to the wonderful poet, Buffy Silverman, for hosting the linkup today. As Buffy points out, the days are already one minute longer than on the Solstice. Follow the link to her for some wonderful puppy haiku.

Also, thanks to Doraine Bennett for her warming Winter Poetry Swap package, in which I discovered massagers, a coloring page and gel pens. There was also a beautiful poem to encourage relaxation, a few lines quoted here:

“Be still, knowing
in silence words resonate
in stillness movement persists
in winter roots reach deep.”

Thanks, Doraine for the time, thought and inspiration!

  1. The roses around here hung onto their petals unlike roses in my memory, Brenda. The red petals on the snow creates quite a contrast!
Merry, happy new year and holiday season away from school to your kiddos! ❤ Hope this next year will be kinder to your health and body, as well as continue to bring you Joy! 🙂

  2. Really enjoyed your friendly fairy tale about winter. I especially like these lines:
    “Sledding at zero
    Fahrenheit
    brings a hot-cocoa-
    and-cookie appetite.”

I wish you a season rich with your favorite people, foods, drinks, and activities–like snowballing?
