Uncommon Dragonfly

Common Whitetail female dragonfly

 Uncommon mother,
Uncommon tired,
Living for 36 days,
Still, evanescent, wired.

Ode to a Japanese Beetle

Beetle
Oval iridescent green body,
Wings of bronze, quiet and still,
Always hungry, tasting nature’s nectar,
Making lace of leaves, living life with a will.

Note: This is a Popillia Japonica or Japanese Beetle. The photo was taken in Dover, MA in the Noanet Woodlands.

White Magic

White Petunias

White petunias made a happy, bright sight
Around the lair of the white witch.
So surrounded by beauty and light,
It gave the dark mage a painful twitch.

Frog, Alone

Frog was completely alone! Toad was worried: was Frog sad? Frog answered: “I am happy. I am very happy. This morning when I woke up, I felt good because the sun was shining. I felt good because I was a frog. And I felt good because I have you for a friend. I wanted to be alone. I wanted to think about how fine everything is.”
Arnold Lobel, from Days with Frog and Toad, Alone

Frog in Charles River, algea

Today the sun was shining,
Breeze and sense of ease, entwining.
The frogs were swimming,
All the world was grinning.
Dragonfly fairies danced,
The scent of lilies entranced.

Walden Ponders

We can never have enough of nature.

— Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Walden Pond

Turquoise-tailed baby bluegills tickle our toes.
The scent of pine and wildflowers wafts to my nose.
Purple loosestrife and asters dot the green wayside.
Children splash, fishermen cast, not even fish can hide.
Green-dappled water buoys and refreshes tired mums,
Dragonflies eat mosquitoes, and ants carry off crumbs.
Thoreau wrote of being alone, but that was far in the past,
Instead lots of people hike, fish, swim, play and eat a repast.

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.

Note: We visited Walden Pond today, and had a great time! I hope you had a great day, too. 🙂

A Prince, A Wince and a Shy Summer Fairy

Lived high on a magic hillside,
Making cordial from black cherry
And hiding her sadness inside.

Fairy Ball Gowns

Once upon a perfect night, unclouded and still,
there came the face of a pale and beautiful lady.
The tresses of her hair reached out to make the constellations,
and the dewy vapours of her gown fell soft upon the land.

— Kit Williams

Peony

Designers of fairy couture collections
Grow the very best gowns ever worn,
Lacing perfect petals into dashing confections,
Borrowing starlight to gild and adorn.

Queen Peony, in her ball gown,
Casts the smaller ladies into the shade,
When she dances, in her shining crown,
Hearts are kindled and dreams made.

Mushroom from Nature’s Loom

Mushroom

Woven in layers of filament fine
Is the broad capped mushroom,
Regal and proud, a fungus shrine,
From tiny spoor to fruit of gloom.

Happy Independence Day!

Melted Popsicle

Happy Independence Day!!

Holiday today,
Now we shall play.
Popsicles, tricycles,
Big kids on bicycles.

Let’s fire up the grill
Flip burgers with a will.
Eat the first home-grown tomatoes
With salad made from potatoes.

We just need to see the sun
For the whole day to be fun.
We plan to see the fireworks tonight:
The whole day will turn out right!

Note: Due to rainy weather, all of the above fun will happen tomorrow when we see the sun. Luckily we are flexible. 🙂

If you need a story to read the kids, try Fairy Independence Day.

Pink-Gold Sun

Peonies in sunshine

Summer sunshine’s burns bright,
Rings of pink-gold blinding light.
Peonies burst forth, glossy and fragrant,
Sunshine embraces them, radiant.

Rhododendron Fairy Cafe

“Look at the baby!” An elder fairy cooed then sipped nectar of jalapeño.

“Oh, she’s so cute!” A barrista fairy chimed in, while handing out honey-frappes.

“Look how pink she is!” A third fairy exclaimed, sipping her honeysuckle frappuccino.

“Thanks, my dears,” the mother fairy replied, “I just hope she naps!”

Ideas Blossom at Writer’s Conference

Cherry Blossoms, Sakura

Ideas blossom with a sweet fragrance,
Opening wider with rhythmic cadence,
Each part of nature has its special time,
Thoughts spring musically into joyful rhyme.

Note: Here is some pink for ThinkingPink. This weekend, I am away at the New England Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators spring conference. Ideas are flowing, and I’m jazzed and inspired. If you aren’t a member of a writing organization and you have not yet been to a writer’s conference, I hope you’ll consider it. Not that WP isn’t great, but meeting people in person is powerful, too. I’ll be back next week, and hoping to catch up with everybody!
