Hello and welcome to the virtual home of Brenda Davis Harsham, award-winning Author and Children’s poet.

Together with her fantastic husband and three story-telling children, she enjoys the unpredictability of life in New England.

Her ever-growing Publications page keeps track of where her stories and poetry may be found in the wild — anthologies and journals and magazines, oh my!

Art Prints are Available at Society6

Occasionally, her busy schedule allows time for school or club visits. Puppets shows with audience participation are her specialty. But don’t ask her to read her poetry! She loves that WAY too much. Craft of Writing workshops are available, one-day or longer as negotiated.

Her fine art photography is available for purchase on the Society6 website, including an Abstracts in Nature series.

She is not soliciting manuscripts from children at this time, but a few are available in the By&4Kids group by clicking here.

    • Thanks! I’m probably supposed to make them harder to read, but since I’m writing for kids of all ages, I like them to be easy yet not lose the beauty of the form. Thanks for your comment, it helps to know I am accomplishing what I try to do. 🙂

    • I would have to sit down with a pencil and work it out. My hubby loves these puzzles. Perhaps I will try it with my kids this weekend. 🙂 I’m too tired and it’s too late at night for a game now. Peace and Joy to you! Brenda

  4. I’m so happy I found your blog – I loved the idea of mushroom condos and will certainly be suggesting the idea that fairies live in them to my 3-year-old. We’re big on fairies over here at the moment (I even bought her a little fairy door for our garden to put near a tree stump from a craft fair recently). At any rate – lovely blog. I’ll be back!

    • Great! I got my four year old daughter fairy houses and little fairies. She is used to me taking out my camera and trying to get good photos of trees and flowers wherever we go. Now if I miss one, she reminds me. 🙂

  6. You are such a wonderful writer! I love the way you describe things and characters. I`m also a fairy tale lover. Childhood is the basis for my love of fairy tales. I was a voracious reader as child (still I am). I like also to write tales for the children. Like you, I’m inspired by nature, my kids, my pets or my memories. I hope I can publish my first book next spring.
Thank you for your heart warming comment!

  7. Thanks for visiting my blog today and even more for creating this fantastic blog. I was obsessed with fairy-tales as a child and have to admit haven’t really put them down as an adult. I look forward to delving into your imaginary world.

    • Gloria, Always happy to look at another great blog. Are you a fairy tale lover like me? Because I like art and biology, like you. I marry an interest in horticulture, plants and wild life to imagination. It makes me happy. Your story of your husband is so wonderful. Warmly, Brenda

        • Oh my. I’m writing as I go mostly, still have some other things written that I haven’t published, including a chapter book for kids, but it’s only 12 chapters. I like that I have to keep writing. 🙂

      • Do you find harder writing for kids or for adults. Because at this moment, although it´s only been 7 months since I´ve returned to writing and 7 months of sending things to literary magazines, I´m actually thinking either write for kids or go for cartoons.

        • I’ve always been a writer, published first in high school, then again in college. Writing was always a big part of my daily work life as well. I started telling stories and reading aloud to my kids, and I found myself writing for them. As long as you are telling a story from inside you, the story part isn’t the hard part. The hard part is the craft of writing, the mechanics, the grammar and editing. That part is the same, whatever story you are telling.

          • And that last part is the most boring thing, all the in´s and out´s of story telling. My head spins when I read about story structure, arch of characters, things like that. I get it, it´s something you have to master in order to write well. But do I feel happier when I just write and write without thinking about those things.

            • I imagine William Faulkner would have said the same as you. He was very stream of consciousness. But various people have already proven that he would not be likely to be published today. You have to start somewhere, step by step. The craft part can be rewarding and delightful when you see your words clarifying, your ideas crystalizing and your message being received. Just breathe. And keep writing. Please try to chose a safer lifestyle this time, friend. I wish you luck on your healing, inside and out. Hugs, Brenda

  11. Oh my goodness!!! how I looked for a class like that! Before I moved to Toronto in 97 I was taking such a class …I was the baby of the class….in my 40’s and the rest were 65 and over. I loved going every week as doing it as a group, their story…their snippet to share jogged memories for each and everyone of us…I never found such a class in Toronto…now you got me wanting to check and if not, to start one…I have wanted to write my grandmother’s memoirs which would be half hers intermingled with mine. something to ponder on during my time off.:) Thanks so much for your kind words. 12. I am so glad, Brenda, you had a visit on my blog, now I found you. I am really interested in reading more of your stories. Years ago, in another life when …{oh, there I go…} I started a distance writing course way before we had computers and gave up half way through when…life happened with the 2 children and so forth. I am so glad I found this blog. Thank you for visiting mine. Too back you live so far…I would love to take classes in writing by you! Oliana

    • I love to write. The best course I ever took for my writing was editing. It taught me the technical side of the craft better than any creative writing course would have. It taught me how to look up the tricky rules, like lay/lie and capitalization, and not rely on memory. I am teaching a memoir writing course at the local Senior Center. What I always tell my students: your voice matters. Your story matters. Put yourself in the story. I think you know these things already. You are way ahead of the game. I loved visiting your blog — your voice is clear and engaging. Well done!! I look forward to hearing your voice more! 🙂 Warmly, Brenda
