Spring Greening

Blue scilla flowers

tiny shoots
break the brown earth,
rabbits are glad

tiny shoots of gladness
tickle my wintery skin

Notes: Happy Nearly Spring! This poem is a tanka. Did my poem surprise you?

Writing Tip: A Tanka is a Japanese poetry form that has five lines with syllable counts per line of 5, 7, 5, 7, and 7. In another way of thinking of it, a Tanka is a haiku with two seven-syllable lines added as a second stanza. Some find the syllable counts are maximums not goals. The third line is intended to be a surprise or a turning point, a pivot, about which the meaning of the poem turns or changes.

    • I’m afraid we don’t, not yet. I was dreaming of spring. Thursday, I’ll put up a post that actually reflects what New England is looking like. I wanted to dream about spring today, though, given it’s almost spring.
