rain-soaked soil squelches,
toad high-hops, hip-hoppity,
among green shoots

Notes: Frogs hibernate in the garden, as I discovered for myself one day when I was digging up crabgrass in April. Last saturday, we took apart our umbrella stand and discovered a garter snake, shaken out of hibernation. Everything in New England is waking up, from the bulbs to the slugs to the frogs. Last summer, we startled the frog in the photo, managing to snap a picture before he high-hopped away. The photo seems suited to a spring poem, though. May you find some life hibernating around you or taking a rest in your shadow — sudden movement makes you feel alive.
Your excellent verse celebrates a lovely sign of spring

Yes. And working hard with soil is very calming.

I love the toads around here. I haven’t seen them. But their songs are beautiful!
