Rare Unicorn Sighting

To my daughter,
dazzling as a unicorn,
ten just now,

double digits,
double trouble,
and double wow!

Notes: Happy Birthday to our little unicorn. When she isn’t a unicorn, she’s a cat or a moose. Whatever her current guise, she’s a lot of fun. Have a magical day!

My poem about my unicorn is more of a memoir. I hunted for other unicorns in the blogosphere, and I found a few nibbles:

A long time ago, when the earth was green
and there was more kinds of animals than you’ve ever seen,
and they run around free while the world was bein’ born,
and the lovliest of all was the Unicorn.

There was green alligators and long-neck geese.
There was humpy bumpy camels and chimpanzees.
There was catsandratsandelephants, but sure as you’re born
the lovliest of all was the Unicorn.

I rode a rainbow unicorn.
We sailed across the sky.
(I’d fed him lots of Skittles,
since they always make him fly.)

Happy Poetry Friday and Happy Unicorn Sighting! Thanks to Catherine Flynn at Reading to the Core who is hosting and celebrating International Women’s Day. I am celebrating, too, but closer to home.

  1. Well Brenda, You made my day with Shel Silverstein’s “The Unicorn” poem, it’s also a song which I remember fondly singing and dancing to as a child. Here’s a link to the song: https://youtu.be/X2BvGx-J8to Love your poem and your daughter in the whimsical unicorn garb–I’m sure the “wow” is going to carry you all through. Sending you smiles, hugs, and xox through the stratosphere for making me so happy tonight 😉 thanks!

  2. Your daughter is as delightful as your poetry.
The unicorn has a special place in my heart because it is, apart from being wonderful and magical, Scotland’s National Animal.
I have written about it from time to time; this is a piece from one of my alter egos:
