Gardens Green

IMG_0499

Summer is
a meandering path,
mowed green,
leaf music,
birdsong bursts,
shade on a hot day,
flowers nodding.

Drowsy days
of sleepy warmth,
a trowel full of earth,
loamy and damp,
ready for roots,
ready for rain,
gardeners nodding.

Notes: Does the heat make you sleepy? Or are you energized? All winter long, I dream of summer. I’m thankful for each warm day, the time of year when New England shines. Happy Poetry Friday and thanks to poet Margaret Simon at Reflections on the Teche for hosting. Congrats to her for her new book of poetry, Bayou Song.

  2. “Drowsy” – yes! We’re back in full swing at school now, and I’m missing those sleepy summer days! Ruth, thereisnosuchthingasagodforsakentown.blogspot.com

  3. Our summer is so hot that it’s impossible to think about getting outside in the garden. I love the structure of your poem and the repeated nodding. Also love “birdsong bursts.”

  4. Gorgeous garden and poem–both are so lush with life and green. I’m definitely in the heat makes me sleepy–maybe it’s left from those long, muggy summer days in the south when everything slowed down in the oppressive heat. On the other hand, give me a crisp, cold day–snow or sunshine–and I’m ready for adventure!

  5. Brenda, this can be another lovely addition to my summer gallery for it captures summer as a drowsy day season where we can meander through life. This is a wonderful poem and photo combination just waiting for more eyes to view it as a digital inspiration.

  6. Your poem really captures verdant, dreamy days, Brenda. ❤ I like Molly's comment about wondering what she will harvest from her summer cultivation. It's the mystery that keeps things interesting!

  7. One of the things I love most about summer is the time to meander. Your poem makes me consider what roots I may have put down during these peaceful, wandering days of summer, intentionally or not, and what may grow from them. Lovely poem and beautiful photo!
