Finds tongues in trees, books in running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything.
— William Shakespeare
Warning, my geek flag is flying again! If you’re looking for a story to inspire young girls to love math, you’ll find it in Nothing Stopped Sophie: The Story of Unshakable Mathematician Sophie Germain, by Cheryl Bardoe, illustrated by Barbara McClintock, Little, Brown and Company, 2018.
It’s a story of the first woman to win a grand prize from the Royal Academy of Sciences, and the obstacles she had to overcome to do it, not being allowed to study math or attend university. Further confirmation that Girls Rock!!
Notes: The life of a writer isn’t that different from Sophie’s. Toiling alone, bending and twisting words this way and that. Just substitute numbers for words.
Lovely location for a good read.
