A Girl Can

A girl in a pine tree with sun shining through needles

Freed,
treed,
high as a bird,
like a rising song,
with a need to climb
ever higher,
a girl can believe,
can succeed,
can belong.

Notes: I wrote this for Twitter today, but I liked it so much, I’m putting it here, too. We girls need our anthems. If you’re looking for me on Twitter, I’m @BrendaDHarsham. If you write very short poetry, twitter has an active #micropoetry community.

  1. Love this! Girl Power! I designed the costumes for a Disney movie once, the original Cheetah Girls. It was about girl power, and there was a song titled “Girl Power” in it.
This poem may have few words, but it does take us “high as a bird” ⭐

  2. Love the photo of empowerment, Brenda. My girls climbed many ‘trees’ their youth. It’s all in the believing that one can. They are both following their adventurous hearts in adulthood. ❤
