june berries abound
bees buzz, fairies flutter, and
mother nature nods . . .
I wrote her a poem, in reply, and celebrating Tuesday’s thundershowers:
Like the bees and fairies,
I’m sunshine-happy,
warm-strawberry-happy,
in-a-trance-happy.
Crack-crack-crash!
Dash for the door
as lightning brightens
a darkening day.
Rage divine.
Wet earth. Mint leaves.
Bitter tomato stems.
I soak it up.

Beautiful postcard features of fairy as a monarch butterfly and her precious words were a treat.

You’ve reminded me of a thought as I picked tomatoes from my mother’s garden…how can such a sweet, smooth red tomato come from such a bitter, rough green stalk?

Yes, the tomato stem is so bitter and bendy, so apt to break and fall. I suppose it’s best for the plant if the seeds reach the soil early. But I much prefer my tomatoes unchewed by chipmunks. 🙂

“Bitter tomato stems” that one line evokes summer! The tomato plant smell is unmistakable, and unforgettable.

Yes. The doleful yellow blooms. The tiny green fruit bulging on the bitter stems. My garden is planted, but unfenced. Will I get anything or will the turkeys take it all? Life is a gamble.

Love the encroaching storm you’ve described in your poem, and the twist in this line is powerful,
“as lightning brightens
a darkening day.”
