Cat went here. The moon was there.
Cat crept toward the Dandelion moon.
Cat’s paw was an asteroid, flying fast.
Her eyes were flaming stars, seeing past
now into then, forward and back again.
Dandelion moon spun like a top.
Possums hid and time stopped.
Light dimmed, but Cat did not.
The moon hid. Cat sang her lonely
song in the dark, all night long.

Notes: This poem tells a story inspired by Yeats:
The Cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping Cat, looked up.
— William Butler Yeats, an excerpt from the Cat and the Moon, found in Poetry for Young Readers: William Butler Yeats, Sterling Publishing, 2002.

You should get one! They aren’t much bother. Of course, this is coming from the mind and mouth of someone who has no children. I have 2 babies (10 years old). Try to get a short haired, silky cat. They shed the least. Purrrr!

I would love to get one, but my allergies would get me. 😦

This poem reminds me of a recent field trip to the Planetarium where we learned about the phases of the moon and the constellations. I imagine this cat and moon in the night sky. Your poem is like a myth, intriguing and true.

Thanks, Margaret. My daughter has been retelling and making up pour quoi tales. Perhaps that’s what leapt into this poem. 🙂

Brenda, that is a stunning poem….funny but provocative as well. Some days I am the cat….or the possum….or the moon.
Well done!

Thanks, Linda. Me, too. I felt like the cat last night, but this morning, I am blinking like a possum. 🙂

I will look at dandelions differently now, Brenda. It’s a gorgeous image — seeing a dandelion as the shadowy moon.
