I step out of my writing cave
into a day of misty rain, blinking.
A squirrel is digging
a hole in the dark soil.
He turns his shoulder.
A woodpecker tap-tap-taps,
tap-tap-taps, tap-tap-taps
his woodland beat.
The rain falls too lightly to hear,
but it clings in a veil of diamonds
to my silvering hair,
the evergreens and the columbine.
My tongue tastes every rain
that ever fell, that washed
dinosaurs, carved canyons,
gleamed in glaciers
for a million years.
The water blesses me, gentle as
starlight I cannot see.
