Red Tether

red heart wreaths

Your absence is a
red tether
unifying me, terrifying me,

a niggle
in a murky backroom
of my mind

a nagging worry,
a where-are-you,
are-you-okay

worry,
ballooning up
into the sky.

Notes: Happy Valentine’s Day on February 14th! A weekend for love poems. Here is an excerpt from Where He Is, a poem by Naomi Shihab Nye (from her book of poems, A Maze Me: Poems for Girls, Greenwillow Books, copyright 2005):

Because I knew the boy I haven’t met yet
is here too, somewhere close by,
and I knew he was looking up,
I could feel him looking.

Her Poem reminds me of Practical Magic, a wonderful, dark and magical movie that suggests we wish for each other, even when we haven’t met or aren’t together. In 2014, I wrote a fairy tale called The Red String. Perhaps these images are still bobbing in my mental murk.
