My dragging feet find
note cards from the multi-verse
with its stanzas of seasons,
rhyming couplets of colors,
a scatter of indifferent,
curled and contorted shapes,
but shining through
all the confusion of messages,
the scuffed leaf hieroglyphics,
is love from the catalpa,
the tree of giant magic beans
where fairy tales dwell
and its calling cards,
its smiling green leaves,
leave me in no doubt
of my relationship to the earth.

Note: My daughter’s bus stop is paved with catalpa leaves, sending subliminal messages. But we noticed.
