Oh to be chicory,
abloom beneath hickory,
hearing rain chime and
dressed in diamonds.
I’d shine on byways,
brightest on dark days,
a mysterious blue rune
of an elemental syllabary,
Mother Nature’s boon.
I wouldn’t need
perfect weather
or a backdrop of heather.
My cornflower raiment,
sky bright, is just right:
bedraggled, rain-frazzled,
wild-spangled, star-tangled,
earth shine and divine.
Note: The summer wildflowers are an inspiration. I wrote another poem to this hardy native.
Oh the humble chicory. One of my favourite wildflowers 🙂

Ok. Thanks Brenda. I’m sure it’s good for us, if we fancy an alternative!

Ooooo, lovely! I didn’t know chicory looked like that. Isn’t chicory what they sometimes mix with instant coffee powder? 💖🌸💖

Yes, the root is. I’m told it’s bitter, but I’ve never tried it.

Sweet flower. Many names. We learned to call it Ragged Sailor.

Yes, it’s also been called Bachelor’s Buttons. I included its names in the first poem I wrote.

They are the same flower that bloomed a thousand years ago. It’s a cool idea.

It’s all over New England. Right now the goldenrod and chicory is gorgeous.

I first saw those flowers growing on the roadside near a river. I remember asking my husband to stop the car so I could take some pictures.

LOL My hubby was waiting in the car when I snapped this one, too. As were my three kids. 🙂
