Twenty Minutes at Horseneck Beach, Mass., poem by Brenda Davis Harsham (BEACH AND POOL MEMORIES Poetry and Prose Series)

Check out a picture of my daughter and a summer poem on Silver Birch Press! Such fun to write and lovely to see it published.

by Brenda Davis Harsham

My daughter chants
Beach, beach, beach!
in her wobbling soprano.
Bluebell skies,
wavy-air heat, a
parking lot half-eaten
by sand dunes.
Stiff winds smell
salty-clamy-fishy.
We add our coconut
sunscreen scent.
My husband and I unload
one picnic blanket,
two beach chairs,
three pails,
four shovels,
one cooler,
one giant towel tote,
two beach umbrellas,
one beach cart,
one song-girl
and two grumbling boys,
looking slightly green
from wrong turns and
illegal U-turns when our
GPS failed us.
We push, shove, pull and carry
our gear past cars
pumping Brazilian rhythms
and weaving a
welter of languages,
Spanish, Hindi, Portugese,
French, American English,
Australian English, German,
Korean and your-guess.
15 minutes of donkey labor
over feet-sinking soft sand,
we reach the solid threshold
of packed damp sand.
Waves tease and retreat.
My daughter sinks her shovel
and beams as if…

  1. I wrote a comment over on Silver Birch Press.
More detailed than this. . . lovely imagery and was charmed by the photo of your cute daughter, she’s a mini-you! Your using unique words shows how you really know how to “turn a phrase,” Brenda. 🙂

    • We were in the woods yesterday, and we saw a woodland jumping mouse hop! I had never heard of it, but I looked it up. It was a fabulous moment for a naturalist like me. 🙂 We never would have seen it, but we were playing frisbee golf, and one of the discs landed near it. It’ll end up in a poem for sure. 🙂

      • I know the feeling Brenda, a few months ago my brother and I were visiting a cathedral grounds where I live, sat down to a lovely cup of tea and cake in their stately grounds and suddenly a little mouse appeared near some tree roots. A little girl ran by in her pretty fairy costume – followed by her three fairy costumed friends. Their speedy feet made the poor mousy jump sky high into the bushes – it was hilarious – unforgettable! Definitely poem material! 😀

        • I’m not sure what you mean by “take you on as a client.” Other writers speak well of Silver Birch. I submitted one poem that wasn’t exactly what they were looking for. They sent me a very nice rejection and invited me to submit again, if I could more closely track what they were looking for. I thought it over. I wrote another, more strictly following what they wanted, and their editor was very nice. They will be doing an anthology from some of the poems, and publishing many on their site. I’d like to be in an anthology one day… if it worked out. They put out calls for submissions regularly. This was the first time I tried my luck. I’d submit again sometime.

            • I know they also publish anthologies. I don’t know what else they publish aside from poetry. You could look them up. I keep learning more and still feeling lost in the weeds in this business. Not enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do. But it’s fun being connected, getting my words out there.
