Happy Birthday to Robert Frost

foo dog dragon statue, white

Dragon’s voice rings
with thundering wings.
The foo dog’s yawn
brings the dawn.
From life to statue,
I take my cue.

Note: A Happy Belated birthday to Robert Frost, arguably the most famous poet in the US if not the world. The Road Not Taken is a concept that has taken hold and hasn’t let go, despite the poem’s later acknowledgement that the path trod was as worn as the other. That shows the importance of a good title. Have a great week! Warmly, Brenda

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

  1. I liked your haiku with your inspiration taken from the dragon statue. The foo dog yawning to tip off the dawn was marvelous and fun!
My sister in law who is a professor and Dean at Baldwin Wallace, shared the “joke” about Frost’s poem with me 26 years ago. I like several poets, you included, and continue to admire Robert Frost.
I just asked that she not ruin “Desiderata.” (Go placidly. . .) Since I had only 4 posters in college, one with the iconic forest path in a “Y,” along with the mentioned older classic. I wrote a post about the author, who I believe was in a faith based position, Brenda. I think he lived in a monastery but after I research my essays I let some of the details out of my cluttered brain. Smiles, Robin

    • Desiderata is lovely and full of good advice. “Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.” I’m not one to criticize forgetting. Rather, I’m an admirer of forgetting, it’s all to the good. It the secret of true forgiveness and happiness, to truly let go of bad moments.

      • Fantastic how you were able to call the words out to Desiderata, Brenda. It was once a mantra to me. 🙂
Well, glad you allow forgetfulness to be a positive since as we age, our brain has a wacky sense of humor of what “trivia” we remember at times. Lol!
Even though I am a sporadic commenter, I was sincere in how I include you in the “poets who have touched my life.” ❤
