Bat Haunts

Bat Haunts Trees poem picture

Text again, for text to speech readers:

Bat
haunts
dark trees
in leaf costume, hunting.
The full silver moon hides its eyes.

Note: This is offered for the 5th Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest at Susanna Leonard Hill’s blog. Susanna is a children’s book writer, and she is offering awesome prizes for contest winners: critiques, magazines and books, oh my! I imagine mine is too short to be taken seriously, but if you have a 100 word or less story or poem, done by midnight tonight (I know, right? But I just found out about it half an hour ago!) with some form of the words dark, haunt and costume, then throw your hat in the ring.

    • This is a good question, and I’m trying to be better about accessibility. I have contents above on the menu with lists of pieces, because it can be very slow loading things post by post. I have a search box, which WP makes easy. I also have categories in the sidebar, so people can search for poetry or fairy tales. I know that some people are putting descriptive text on pictures, so when you scroll over them, a text reader would read the text, but I’m not exactly sure how that works yet. I’ve always put a photo title in Alternate Text, and perhaps that’s enough, but I haven’t researched it yet. Probably making MP3s available would also be good, but I haven’t gotten that sorted yet. Other blogs offer other language translations, but I don’t know any other languages well enough to translate my own words, and I don’t trust google translate to do a good job on poetry. That about wraps up the issues on my agenda. It’s a complicated world, isn’t it? But a beautiful one.

  1. I actually like bats. Good luck. I’m kinda ‘Halloweeny-ed out’ these days. And I missed the dead line…
I have been watching less TV, but I just never seem to have enough time to do everything…
Hope all is well with you and yours – Thanks for stopping by.
The last time WP did some sort of update, well it seemed a bunch of folks dropped off the face of the net.
I just can’t follow everyone, but I do try to return visits.

    Hugs. Jules.

  2. My counter is: The bat picked up by sonar an image of something to eat,
It was the blood of a man sitting on a toilet seat.
The neck extended bent reading the news of the day,
The bat landed on his bald spot and fanged away

  3. I’m always amazed at what you can say in (well) less the 100 words. I think I use more to order fast food. Kudus for printing the text for screen readers. I only recently came to realize how important that is for some people.
