This is a day to remember the fallen.
And to celebrate the magic of being alive.
Happy Memorial Day!
Warmly, Brenda
Note: Monday is a Federal holiday. Originally it honored the many casualties of the US Civil War, which outnumbered all other US wars combined until Vietnam. Americans are notorious for independence, pride and an amalgam of culture and traditions. In my family, we grill outdoors, play sports and picnic. We might kick around a soccer ball in the park or ride bicycles tomorrow. What does your family do? Does your country have a Memorial Day to honor those who fell in war?
Thank you for the follow and the likes. 🙂

it is a day of remembering those who have left us too early and those who remain. we usually get together and share a bbq after a parade or gardening session. relaxed and peaceful.

Sounds similar to us. May is a month of planting around here.

In France, as in the UK, November 11th is Remembrance Day, commemorating the end of WWI in 1918.

Australia has ANZAC Day, celebrated usually with great solemnity on the 25th April, this year marked the centenary of the birth of the ANZAC legend on the shores of Gallipoli on the 25th April 1915.
Very few Americans know of this, there are exceptions like gpcox the Pacific Paratrooper who did us proud this year as always.

GPCox is a great blogger. I can’t aspire to his erudition, but I do try to appreciate the issues, which are serious ones. Personal and global for so many of us whose families were diminished by fighting.

I have such wonderful warm memories of Memorial Days past from my childhood. Parade complete with marching bands and veterans and an incredibly moving ceremony at our village cemetery. I miss those days and I miss that routine. It’s not ever been quite the same.
Thank you for reminding us to think of all those who have served with honor for our freedom, Brenda. I hope your day is a brilliant one.

I have been hearing bands on and off all day. It’s been glorious. And we cooked and ate outdoors despite wasps and the neighbor running his gas cultivator, which is his Memorial Day tradition.

Brenda, you and I have been on each other’s site on and off for quite awhile, so please don’t become offended when I say that saying HAPPY Memorial Day is not appropriate. It is a solemn day of respect and honor for the deceased troops. If you wish to delete this comment – I understand.

I won’t delete it, but I don’t necessarily agree. Honoring the fallen is a solemn business, and an important one to devote our thoughts to. I hope you won’t be offended if I then also celebrate the living, without whom none of us would be here either. I lost relatives, too. I honor them. It’s much the same as saying Happy Easter, I suppose. It’s in human nature to celebrate life despite the sadness of the event being remembered. I meant no disrespect, my friend.

Easter is happy though because Christ ROSE from the dead. But I understand what you’re saying.

BEING ALIVE IS INDEED MAGIC. AND SOME OF US DON’T UNDERSTAND TOTALLY THAT SO MANY VOLUNTEERED TO GO…BUT THEY DID. HAVE TO HONOR THEM FOR THAT.

We have to thank those who went, and those who came back. And those who kept the country going while the others were gone.

It’s a bit sad but we rarely talk about the death of loved ones. They are still with us, in some fashion.

Happy Memorial Day! 🙂 In Norway we celebrate pentecoast this weekend. We dont have a day to remember the fallen in war. But I love the pentecoast story! I love to think about how Jesus’ spirit of unconditional Love came down to earth to be with us forever. I think that is more important than all that dying for our sins and all, I dont like that part so much. So in my mind, the most important thing is how the holy spirit came after Jesus’ death, his everlasting presence on earth. To me the holy spirit is pure, divine, unconditional LOVE! ❤ My family dont do anything for this holiday because they are not religious or spiritual, but I have been trying to get my mother to take me to the sea coast, I like that better than church. Let's see what she does 🙂
Oh, and did you get my thank you mail about the letters and art work I received from you and your lovely daughter? I am going to do a post about it as well. 🙂 I will tell you when the post is up 🙂
Have a lovely Memorial Day! 🙂
Lots of Love and BIG hugs !! ❤ ❤ ❤
