White Queen’s Fall

White Mums

Pawn lost at the dawn,
Blacks carrion crows
Checkmate at the close,
Victory now seems small:
King mourns White Queen’s fall.
Perhaps the price of war
Is too high after all.

Note: The game of chess is a bloodless battle to the eventual doom of an opponent. Do you play? Are you ruthless? Are you willing to sacrifice your queen?

  1. Your verses would go well among the script of an english, Victorian movie… Maybe a film based on a novel by Jane Austen!~
Excellent poem. I truly liked it, Bren!` thanks for sharing and best wishes to you. Aquileana 😀

  2. I really liked this, Brenda. The colors of the chess game come into play but the meaning of the world takes it to another dimension. Wishing for peace and no more real checkmates!

  3. Your poem reminds me of a Greek tragedy. There’s always a price, there’s always a price.

Anyway, I play rudimentary chess. I know how to move the pieces. That’s all. The rare times I played, I always protected the queen, as best as I could.
