In-Between Weekend

West Dennis Beach sunset

Salty breezes lift away cares.
Color spills across the water,
Too intense for the sky to contain.
Horseshoe crabs dance a blurry ballet,
Twisting and turning in the gentle waves.
Seabirds swim quietly, at peace.
Twilight wanes, in-between day and night.
Summer is ending; school is about to begin.
In-between holds powerful magic.
Tomorrow seems far away,
Yesterday, a pleasant, hazy memory.
The right-now is a time of beauty.
Fleeting, but all the more precious for it.

  1. You have had quite a summer and it is amazing how you kept on writing and sharing with us, too! Brenda, so wonderful to read your poetry with the sort of sad, lingering of summer and the fun, expectant greeting of fall and school time, too!

    • Ah, I am always sad when the kids go back to school. I love our summers together. I feel the writing calling me. I have a book to try to finish this month, but my internet has been mostly down for a week. Fingers crossed it’s fixed and not about to die again. 🙂 Hugs, Brenda

  2. Brenda you have just pierced my heart…
I have lived a number of similar moments, similar thoughts
almost as poetically unfolding in my mind as your creation
while walking at our local Beach.
Now all an unrepeatable Memory …some times happy to recall
sometimes trying to forget to hold the tears back…
Photos are not the same, but reading though brought it all back.
    May you enjoy many more!

    • I wish you were there on the beach beside me, my friend. I think we pass down our appreciation for these things to our children. Maybe even our grandchildren learn those moments from us if we are that lucky.

My children played with the horseshoe crabs, and women walked by with purse-sized dogs. The wind carried all sounds away except those of my children and the waves. I hope I remember that sunset always. Hearing your words, about what that day means to you, adding your layers of meaning to it, makes it even more special to me. We never realize we are making our most precious memories when we are in the middle of making them. Only when we look back do we realize, and the pain of that actually hurts. To know they are gone, is bittersweet.

I struggled with this piece, trying to convey something a bit sore, and tender. I’m so glad you commented, and let me know that I succeeded, even if in small part. It’s such a solitary endeavor being a writer.

  3. Lovely poem and photo. I live in MA and the beach areas can be so relaxing and beautiful to visit especially if you want to be “in the moment” like you described. 🙂
