Red Pajamas Shadorma

IMG_2772

Little leaves
Buried in the snow,
Peeking out
Like children,
Dressed in their red pajamas,
Throwing off covers.

Note: This poem is called a Shadorma, which is a rhythmic six-line poetry form, each line having specific syllable counts of 3, 5, 3, 3, 7 and 5. It may be modern; it may be a revived older poetry form. Some attribute it to Spain, although to me it sounds Indian, for no other reason than it rhymes with Lamb Korma. No authority I found gave it a definitive origin, and I offer it to you as a beautiful form, allowing a licentious 26 syllables instead of the austere 17 permitted by haiku. It’s a heady freedom!

  1. Aw this is such a cute poem! Love the idea of leaves wearing pyjamas 🙂 I had never heard of a Shadorma before, thanks for introducing me to it – will have to give it a go sometime! x

    • Thanks again. I bought my kids red pajamas one year, and they were so adorable!! My boys have grown out of wanting to be adorable, but my daughter is 4 and still willing. I will miss it when she grows out of it. Meanwhile, nature will still be there to remind me. 🙂

  2. I bet my creative writing teacher would definitely approve of this, as a matter of fact, he might hang it up on the wall and jab at it with his big old fingers and say, ‘this is art.” Well, at least, if I was a creative teacher, I would do that. Your poetry is seriously brilliant, it’s so “concrete” and amazing. I’m sorry, even while taking a creative writing class I still manage to fail when commenting on poetry.

Anyway, I have been scrolling around your blog for a while and I just found where you’ve been hiding the “comment” button. Ahaha. Sorry for the late comment. Keep writing, you have a way with words.

    • Thanks, you made me laugh. I do hope your teacher would like it. But in the end, I write for myself. And you must do the same. Please yourself first, and you will please others, too. That’s my theory, and I’m sticking to it. I’m working on a snow day poem now. I may be too tired to finish, though. It’s late. Thanks for commenting!! Cheers, Brenda

  3. I like this! Reminded me of Dr. Seuss books, I seem to remember reading one/some as a child, where either kids or some kind of pajama-wearing creature wore red pajamas with pointy red pajama feet in it!

I’ll have to remember to refer back to this and try the format out sometime!
