Swinging

We need to hear young voices. I hope you enjoy this view of the world from a very young voice.

A Poem by A.H., age 4

When I’m swinging,
I’m bigger than Mommy and Daddy.
I’m bigger than the trees.
I’m bigger than the wood chips
And the playground.
I’m bigger than everything.

  1. Oh, how lovely – I can almost hear her voice in those words!♥ And swings – I used to LOVE swings!!! 😀 That glorious feeling when you get up really high and you have a glimpse of the world in a way you’ve never seen before. It’s an exhilarating feeling, and that really comes across in that poem! I think this young lady may have some real talent, and I’m sure it won’t be her last poem!
This is very timely for me, because the novel I’m writing at the moment is about a little girl and her Dad. The girl grows up to a teenager as the story progresses. But right now I’ve been writing pieces with her speaking (to the reader) and I have to give careful thought and stretch my memory a bit to recall my own thoughts at 4 or 5, as to how she would sound. So this is very helpful, reading of the real mind of a child. I’ll have to do a scene with her on a swing! So you can tell her now that she’s caused inspiration for my book! 😀

    • Awesome, she will get a slowly emerging, increasingly delighted look. She puts her whole face and soul into her smiles. Most of her sentences start with I want, but she is a thoughtful creature. This was quoted exactly. My mom died when I was 4, and I remember her as a goddess, if that helps. The giver of all things. My center. My father is harder to remember from then, because he kept his place in my life, bless him. I suspect that my love was mixed with longing at that age, because he was gone so many hours. And joy when he came back. And maybe a little awe. Blessings with your writing. That is a great undertaking.

      • Oh, that’s really terrible about your Mum, age 4 is not a good age to lose your mother. 😦 You must have become a very strong person because of that! I can’t imagine what my life would have been without my Mum.

I love what you said about her being a goddess, and I know what you mean, at that age certain adults, especially the ones we most rely on, really do feel like that to us. And yes, that does help, because the other day I had actually made a reference in my book of the father saying the way his daughter looked to him for everything, and all answers coming from him, made him feel like a god. How amazing is that, you read my mind, and knew what bit to mention!! Perfect! 😀
