Raspberry leaves dance on a chilly breeze.
Kissed by cold stardust, the violet-edged leaves
Outshine the fading summer’s flowers.
Luminous leafy ovals welcome the coming sleep.
Life force gathers into the stems, retreating root deep
And no cold winter can extinguish its secret powers.

I do love a perennial, when I see those tender shoots in the spring, coming up amide the browned leaves of the last year, it’s like a miracle. An everyday miracle. Gardening is very spiritual in that way.

If you want to see a mature one in bloom in the Spring, look at the second to last photo in: https://friendlyfairytales.com/2013/06/26/jeremiah-brings-joy-to-the-world/ When I wrote Jeremiah, I had not yet identified the bush, but I had such a love affair with it all summer, that when I finally identified it, I found one at a garden center and planted it in my yard. 🙂

I don’t know, but I would think yes. Ask a local plant nursery. I would plant in the spring to be safe. I know they grow in NC. When I visited my husband’s grandfather, who turned 100 in September, his second wife and I got talking about the smokebush, and I showed her a picture of it blooming in the spring. She and her daughter recognized it as a bush they had at a previous house. They want to plant one on each side of the driveway in the spring. 🙂 I hope they do. It is pretty and intriguing from spring through autumn.
