Ode to a Mushroom — Concrete Poetry

Shroom
MushrooM
rising up in the dark,
cap of a wood elf caught
under the trees on a fallen log,
dirty,
damp,
musty
smell,
wiped
clean,
fried in
butter,
divine.

  1. Awesome poem. My wife loves mushrooms fried in a bread batter.

I’ve never like them myself, but they do look cool!

Oh, and you’ve made me want to go and dig out one of my old poems.

    • Why not? Dig it out. I haven’t written much poetry since high school, and I am enjoying my renaissance immensely. 🙂 I have to admit this was an older poem. Pre-blogging era. I made so many drafts of concrete poems, but this was the only one that worked and survived editing. The haiku are all new.

    • Thanks! My kids and I try to write concrete poetry sometimes, and we have found it surprisingly challenging. I may never achieve another, but I will continue to try. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by, Brenda

I’ve “landed” here via Tigress and I’m delighted with what I’ve found… 🙂 My very best & cheers, Mélanie, Toulouse, FRANCE.

    • Simple, but incredibly yummy. I’ll have to put my cream of mushroom soup recipe in a story coming up. It’s ridiculously easy to make your own if you can make a roux. Hugs, Brenda

  3. I love eating fried in butter mushrooms! I also, enjoy seeing all the varieties of mushrooms and toadstools, too. Your poem covered all kinds of great descriptions and I enjoyed it a lot!

    • Thanks! I play it safe and only eat the ones from the store. My current fave is fresh shiitakes and white button mushrooms mixed together. Then add a little cream and serve with steak. Sigh of pleasure. Can’t eat like that every day, but after a hard day of assessing, rearranging and organizing the linen closet, yum!

  4. This is a cute poem, I can just imagine those mini wood elves underneath using them for a cap. Also it reminds me of how awesome my mom’s homemade mushroom soup is. Which actually sounds pretty good right now, because it’s already getting chilly over here.

  5. I’d “like” this if I liked shrooms in fried in butter. But alas and alack, I never partake in the fungus among us. 🙂 I did enjoy your poem except for those last four words!

    • Ah, you must get plenty of vitamin d there in the desert, but here in the gloom of New England, a little extra vitamin d in the diet is divine. And I do like mushrooms, in poetry, stories, and in a wine sauce over steak. Sigh for my father’s grilled steak.
